"Monkey jungle closed by herpes

The drive-through monkey jungle at Longleat in Wiltshire has closed after a monkey was found to have herpes.

Only one creature in the group, a female, was found to have Simian Herpes during routine tests of the rhesus monkey colony at the safari park.

Longleat said the jungle will remain closed while they investigate how the monkey tested positive as none of the other monkeys have done so.

The monkeys are regularly tested by the Health Protection Agency."

The study, conducted by researchers from Uganda and Johns Hopkins University, found that adult male circumcision significantly decreased rates of herpes and the human papillomavirus, which causes genital warts. The study follows three landmark trials from Africa that showed that the procedure reduced HIV rates by up to 60 percent."

New findings from the South African randomised controlled trial (RCT) of circumcision have found that HIV and herpes simplex virus 2 (HSV-2) independently reinforce each others’ effects. People with one infection in the study were more likely to acquire the other infection. The study also found that circumcision protected men in the study against HSV-2 as well as HIV."

Early syphilis, or infection of less than a year, is the most infectious stage of the disease.

Preliminary data from the Minnesota Department of Health show that 159 early syphilis cases were reported in 2008, compared to 114 cases in 2007. Of the cases in 2008, 97 percent were males, and new infections continued to be centered within the Twin Cities metropolitan area."
